Ramit Sethi’s Financial Blog Wins Todays’ Blog Award!

January 31st, 2008 by admin

Recent Stanford graduate and co-founder of a wiki startup in Silicon Valley, Ramit Sethi wants to teach you to be rich. His aptly titled blog on personal finance (banking, saving, budgeting and investing) and personal entrepreneurship,  http://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/blog/ is aimed at college students, recent college grads, and basically anyone else who is ready to take charge of his or her financial future. As he puts it, “This blog is me ranting about a few things and trying to get the points across. Getting started is more important than being the smartest person in the room. Making mistakes is ok. Action is more important than reading 50 blogs. Ordinary actions get ordinary results. And there’s a difference between being sexy and being Rich.” Sethi implores his audience to consciously think about why they want to be rich. “If you don’t,” he explains, “it’s easy to get caught up in a race to get more and more money without ever knowing why.” Citing his desire to never make a bad decision because of money (e.g., staying at a job he doesn’t love because of car payments) as the driving force behind why he wants to be rich and his reasons for teaching others to be rich, Sethi outlines his long-term goals  of earning wealth (the last of which – starting a college fund for high school/college entrepreneurs – is already crossed off) and urges his readers to make a similar list which they should revisit every 6 months. Featuring a wealth of articles on myriad topics from investing basics like All About Mutual Funds to entrepreneurial topics like the Myth of the Great Idea, I Will Teach You To Be Rich is a great resource for those plotting their path to financial freedom. Check it out here: http://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/blog/ and congratulate Ramit on winning today’s Blog Award!

Donor Power Blog Wins today’s blog award!

January 28th, 2008 by admin

Focused on nonprofit types, the Donor Power Blog asserts, “More than ever before, donors are insisting that you share power with them, not treating them like passive ATMs. This blog is about the ways you can do that — and the rewards that await you and your donors when you do.”  One recent post by blog owner Jeff Brooks, highlighted the power of Web 2.0 conversations to shape donor behavior, the same way online reviews, criticisms and accolades have shaped consumer behavior. He advises nonprofits to:

“Pay a lot of attention to your donor experience. What does it feel like to donate to your organization? Do they get acknowledged promptly? Do they learn about the impact of their giving? Do they get choices about what their money does and how you’ll communicate with them?
Make sure what you do is really, really cool. That’s partly a matter of describing what you do in a way that wins hearts and minds. It’s doing something nobody else does, or doing it in a better way. Or doing it in a way that more closely involves donors.
Don’t have a scandal. That’s right, just take that scandal right off your calendar. It will follow you around for a looooong time if it happens.”

Sounds like some of our favorite national charities - United Way, Red Cross, Salvation Army - should pay attention.

Check out the Donor Power Blog today and congratulate them on winning today’s blog award!

January 25th, 2008 by admin

Whether you hear about it online, in a newspaper, on the radio or the TV, most news is, well, generally bad. And that can get kind of depressing. Blogger Eazibee agrees. A little worn out by media negativity, Eazibee started the blog Reasons to be Hopeful to counter this trend in some small way. Eazibee compiles really positive news stories, every day of the year and shares it with anyone who cares to listen. We highly recommend this blog - it’s a breath of fresh air!

No Impact Man Has Big Impact

January 24th, 2008 by admin

What happens when (in his words) a guilty liberal finally snaps, swears off plastic, goes organic, becomes a bicycle nut, turns off his power, composts his poop, and, while living in New York City, generally turns into a tree-hugging lunatic who tries to save the polar bears and the rest of the planet from environments catastrophe while dragging his baby daughter and Prada-wearing, Four Seasons-loving wife along for the ride? A great blog is born (not to mention carbon-emissions were reduced)! Inspiring, jaw-dropping (a 43-year-old man giving away a 42-inch television for the sake of the planet is exactly that), and extremely interesting, No Impact Man (aka Colin Beavan) is an experiment worthy of today’s Blog Award! Congrats!

Nothing to sneeze at…

January 22nd, 2008 by admin

Steve from The Sneeze must be crazy. He’d have to be in order to put such putrid delicacies as Cuitlacoche (a black fungus that infects corn fields, making the kernels bulbous and swollen as they fill with spores), prison wine, and silkworm pupas into his mouth. But thank God he is because, “Steve, Don’t Eat It” is one of the most hilarious categories on his blog, TheSneeze.com. Described as “half zine, half blog, half not good with fractions,” TheSneeze.com features an eccentric mix of personal stories (MLK Day: A Remembrance http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/000757.php), observations (Breakfast Sausage http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/000754.php), and experiments (Raisins vs. Drum Set http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/cat_best_of_the_sneeze_iii.php). Not to mention, any blog that pays tribute to the movie Better Off Dead (http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/cat_better_off_dead_tribute.php), is worth its weight in gold. So, check out TheSneeze.com and congratulate Steve on winning today’s blog award.
