LesbianDad is a personal essay/photography blog about parenthood generally, and lesbian parenthood in particular, with special attention to the experiences of non-birth and/or butch mums and the many larger questions that this unique kind of parenthood opens up. LesbianDad comes by her parenting chops by virtue of a daughter (since September 2004) and a son (since January 2007), both carried and birthed by her beloved partner. While her own family experiences reflect those of many others, LesbianDad also hopes they expand the global understanding of family: Lesbian, Gay, BiSexual, Transgender or otherwise. Check out her fabulous site and adorable kids.

Besides being a middle-aged guy who loves cycling, Elden (aka Fatty, or the Fat Cyclist) is also the father of four kids (2 boys, identical twin girls), and the husband of a woman — Susan — who is fighting metastatic breast cancer. He’s been keeping a blog for almost three years, called “Fat Cyclist“, which he started as a place he could tell jokes and embarrass himself into keeping his weight down. While still comprised of plenty of laughs, Elden is now inclined to also write the occasional serious post, keeping readers, family and friends to date with how his family’s battle is going. Check out Elden’s blog at www.fatcyclist.com and congratulate him on winning today’s Blog Award!

Dedicated to reading material to get excited about, Bookgasm.com features reviews on all kinds of genre fiction, from horror and sci-fi to mystery and suspense. It also includes graphic novels, trashy paperbacks, cheap magazines and other things that much of America pretends to be ashamed of, for no good reason. Bookgasm celebrates these escapist efforts, through daily news, reviews, interviews and other things that don’t end in “-ews.” Editor Rod Lott implores his audience to think of Bookgasm as a community and he encourages posts via the comments section under each item. We love trashy novels and Bookgasm, too! Congratulate them on winning today’s Blog Award by visiting them at Bookgasm.com.

Ever wonder what happened to NFL player Michael Vick’s poor dogs after he was sent to prison for running a vicious dog fighting ring? Wonder no longer. The canines, affectionately dubbed the “Vicktory Dogs,” have found a special home at the Best Friends Animal Society. The sanctuary, at the heart of Southern Utah’s Golden Circle of national parks, is home, on any given day, to about 1,500 dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds and other animals. Check out their blog at http://blogs.bestfriends.org/blogs/bestfriends/ to find out more about the great work this organization is doing and congratulate them on winning today’s Blog Award!

Who says religion has to be boring? Certainly not the folks from SoMA: A Review of Religion and Culture. SoMA, or the Society of Mutual Autopsy, is named for a group of French scientists and intellectuals who set out to unlock the mystery of the human soul in 1876. More to the point, these freethinking anthropologists hoped to prove that the soul doesn’t exist. They maintained that an individual’s personality, character, and abilities, or what we tend to think of as “soul,” correspond to the shape and size of one’s brain. And they believed they could demonstrate this by performing autopsies on decedents whose traits in life they knew. Hitch was, they needed volunteers. Looking around the room, they finally agreed to dissect one another after death, and thus the Society of Mutual Autopsy was born.
Needless to say, after some 30 years of cutting each other’s heads open, this unusual group of organ donors didn’t prove much of anything, except perhaps that there’s a lot about human existence that scalpels can’t explain. But they did leave a wonderfully evocative metaphor—autopsy as a tool for exploring the soul. SoMA is a magazine devoted to dissecting matters of the soul—the sacred and the profane, the ridiculous and the sublime.
As an ongoing autopsy of religion and culture, SoMA seeks to illuminate the difference between authentic and inauthentic faith. Check it out at http://www.somareview.com/ and congratulate founder and editor John D. Spalding on winning today’s Blog Award!
